The city of Lexington, Kentucky, was built on the banks of the town branch of Elkhorn Creek. Its waters provided power for early industry and limestone-filtered water for distilling. Being the first new distillery built in Lexington since prohibition, Town Branch Distillery is proud to revive the city's distilling tradition. Town Branch's Single Barrel Reserve Kentucky Single Malt Whiskey is a cask strength, single cask expression of their flagship malt that is hand-selected by the most distinguished of palates. It is produced with 100% malted barley (the same malt used in their KY Bourbon Barrel Ale). It offers a sweet cereal nose with molasses, vanilla, brown sugar, and nutmeg notes.
Lee Diaz, Topflight Panel Member:
If you're like me, you might be more familiar with Lexington Brewing's beer production than with Town Branch. I have long been a fan of Kentucky Ales, especially the Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale. It was amazing to see first-hand that growing alongside this brewing tradition is an often overlooked, incredible distilling secret to many. Town Branch is churning out Kentucky classics in Bourbon and Rye, but it is genuinely in their Single Malt that they stand alone in the state. Using the malted barley found in my favorite of their beer releases, they have used pot still traditions to develop a mouth-watering flavor profile. In this 103.8-proof single barrel reserve Kentucky single malt, your experience will start with a nose that brings cereal, candied apples, and cinnamon. As you enjoy this pour, you'll find a clearly defined malt matched with molasses, vanilla cake, and a delightful nuttiness matched with florals. The finish lingers with a warm malt, cloves, and vanilla. If you already enjoy single malts, this release will quickly become a new favorite—and if you're just starting to explore the world of single malts (especially those produced in the U.S.), this will be a perfect way to discover this category.
